The Funeral Carriage Collection was inaugurated in 1970 by Mr. Cristóbal Torra, then manager of the Municipal Funeral Service, and displayed in the basement of the Barcelona Cemeteries headquarters, at Calle Juan de Austria, 130 in Barcelona until June 2012 when it was moved to the new installation of the Montjuïc Cemetery.
The reason for this set of pieces of great heritage value lies in the fact that, when the concentration of all funeral activity in a single building was foreseen, it had to be decided what to do with these vehicles that had served in the city of Barcelona for 90 years old and they were already completely out of use due to the evolution of technology and the appearance of the motor car.
The important decision to preserve them and bring them together in a single space meant the creation of the first and only collection of funeral carriages that exist in all of Europe and that is publicly exhibited.
