La escultura representa a una virgen vestida con túnica y velo, con la mirada dirigida hacia la derecha y una expresión de profunda aflicción. Las manos, unidas en actitud de oración, evocan un momento de sufrimiento y duelo. Este motivo iconográfico solicita la intercesión divina ante los acontecimientos que la figura contempla.
Su autor, Venanci Vallmitjana, fue una figura clave de la escultura catalana del siglo XIX. Con su hermano Agapit, renovó las formas y temáticas escultóricas de aquel periodo, influyendo en los escultores de finales de siglo.
